Report links hate groups, anti-immigrant activism

Anti-immigrant sentiment is fueling nationwide increases in the number of hate groups and the number of hate crimes targeting Latinos, according to a watchdog group.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, in a report being released today titled "The Year in Hate," said it counted 888 hate groups in its latest tally, up from 844 in 2006 and 602 in 2000.

Iran indicates it is building another nuclear plant

Iran confirmed that it had received the first fuel shipment for its nuclear powerplant at Bushehr, but also indicated for the first time that it was building a second nuclear power plant.

The revelation came in comments by Iran's Atomic Organization, Gholamreza Aghazadeh, made to state-run television and reported by the semi-official Fars news agency.

He was dismissing speculation that the arrival of the fuel would allow Iran to halt its uranium enrichment program, in Natanz.

HAZLETON - The city's highly publicized campaign of targeting illegal immigrants threatens to drive
away business and industry and damage prospects for economic revitalization, a new report asserts.
The report, by polling firm Zogby International, challenges the mayor's claim that illegal immigrants are
responsible for overburdened police, schools and hospitals. It concludes that Hazleton should embrace
immigration as a "solution to an aging and declining population."

U.N. Security Council approves peacekeeping force for Darfur.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a 26,000-strong peacekeeping force for Darfur to help end four years of rape and slaughter in the vast Sudanese region that the world has failed to stop.
The force - the first joint peacekeeping operation by the African Union and the United Nations - will replace the beleaguered 7,000-strong AU force now in Darfur no later than Dec. 31.

Congressman Murphy’s Bill Condemns Boycott of Israeli Academia

On, July 11, 2007, the House of Representatives passed Pennsylvania Congressman Patrick Murphy’s (D-8th District) resolution that repudiates the University and College Union (UCU) of the United Kingdom for their boycott of Israeli academic institutions. Murphy’s legislation condemns the UCU and urges governments and educators throughout the world to reaffirm the importance of academic freedom and open dialogue. The resolution also urges the general members of the UCU to reject the call of the union’s leadership to boycott Israel both economically and culturally.
